Ok so last night I finished the Caroline Mitchell psychological thriller Silent Victim. This is my first reading of a book by Mitchell, so with like all new authors I read I went into it with an open mind.
So the synopsis for the story is that we start with being introduced to Emma, who is married to Alex and they have a young son, called Jamie. Alex is promoted at work and it means selling Emma’s childhood home on a island near Colchester to move to Leeds. Emma should be delighted at Alex’s promotion and move but she is worried that as a result her past may come back to haunt her.
As a teenager, Emma has a tough childhood with her alcoholic mum leaving the family and her father in poor health. At school she is a bit of a loaner but she is delighted when Luke starts as her new art school teacher. He’s young, attractive and pays her attention by listening to her problems and helping her with her artwork. Luke however has an agenda and as he starts to befriend Emma it becomes clear he has desires for her and he grooms her before sleeping with him.
The story flits between Emma at school back in 2003 amd the current day as Emma’s believes that in 2013 she killed Luke and buried his body in a shallow grave on the land of her property. When she looks for his remains to remove them before selling the property she finds that his body is no longer there. The story evolves and Emma ends up confessing to Alex about her past and what she has done but Alex and her sister don’t believe her.
What unfolds is a page turning chilling psychological thriller as Emma convinces herself that Luke is still alive but the thought of it makes her question her sanity, her marriage and her life. The book kept me on tenterhooks as to what was going to happen next and I had no idea until the very end as to how this was going to turn out.
There was one element to the twist which I found that i could not connect with the main part of the story but other than that, I found my first read of a Caroline Mitchell book very enjoyable and would rate it a whooping 9 out of 10 !!
So for all those that cruise and are thinking at what point of my holiday should I be reading this, this is very much a night time before bed kind of book. You won’t want to go to sleep as you will want to keep turning the pages but with a low light on it will add to the chilling effects of the story.
The author has a number of past books they may be worth a read too and I will maybe look to read a few of these but she will definitely go on my list of approved authors. More information on Caroline can be found on her website http://carolinemitchellauthor.com/
So my next book to review takes me in a different direction as it’s a comedy. Hopefully I will read within the next 5-6 days before posting my thoughts !!
