I very rarely read self help books but I saw the title of this one and it made me laugh and I thought that this had the potential to be funny and along the way I might find a gold nugget or two of information about how to make my life better either at home or at work. When I finished it two days after starting I realised firstly why I very rarely read self help books and secondly I had wasted 2 days of my time doing something that I didn’t like doing (lesson number 2 !!).
This was a book that I felt pulling my own teeth out would have caused me less pain.
Sarah Knight the author I think is from America although, I was confused with this fact throughout as one minute she was talking about issues in New York and sounding like an American, then the next she’s talking about places such as Cardiff and Brighton and sounding very British. Anyway I guess it doesn’t really matter where she is from(although upon googling her I still couldn’t find out !), my point about her is that as an author she comes across as though she really likes the sound of her own voice in a loud kinda way. She comes across to me as a self obsessed and brash lady and she loves the use of the F Word. I thought that I could witter utter nonsense but Knight I admit beats me hands down. Throughout reading her book I found my mind wondering on to better things (like looking forward to my trip in July to America and the QM2) as I just did not get what she was going on about and despite the mad cap title of the book I just did not find it funny (and I usually have a mad cap sense of humour too !!!).
As you can guess from the above I really did not like this book, and where as I gave my last book a resounding 10/10 I think that with this one I can only give it a 1/10 and it only gets the one as it’s reminded me not to read a self help book again for a long long time !!!
So if you are on a cruise and you happen to have this among your holiday reading selection (although I highly recommend not having it in your shortlist !), when should you read it ?? I can highly recommend that you read it when you have nothing else left to read and you simply cannot face going to any of the on board entertainment or cannot find another passenger or crew member to spark off some conversation to kill off a bit of time.
Me, will i’m now going to self help myself by returning to reading a good bit of psychological thriller fiction and with a bit of luck in the next five days or so, I’ll be coming back to you with a better review and recommendation of what to read whilst on board ship !!
For anyone cruising this week, have fun and maybe let me know what is on your reading list ??
