The Perfectly Imperfect Woman by Milly Johnson
Ok I have to confess up front dear readers that I am a massive Milly Johnson fan. I may not be your a typical Milly reader, but since I read her first ever book I have always awaited with great anticipation the next Milly novel.
Being a Yorkshire lass (although with the way she is going I would vote her to get a Damehood and become a Yorkshire Dame !!), Milly sets her books in and around Yorkshire and the Imperfectly Perfect Woman is no exception.
The book focusses On thirty something Marnie, who after being abandoned as a baby is adopted but is unloved by her adoptive mother and sister, whilst her adoptive father ran off. Marnie is also unlucky in love and always seems to pick the wrong man however she is successful in her career working for a Coffee Shop company as head of marketing. Things are going well as she wins a big contract but she falls for the charms of Justin Fox, the new head of merchandising and although she keeps telling herself that nothing can happen between them she eventually succumbs to his charms after learning from him that he is separated from his wife. They embark on a passionate relationship but Justin wants to keep it a secret claiming that his ex-wife is a nasty person who will stop him from seeing his children if she found out about his relationship.
At the same time, Marnie joins an online group about making cheesecakes as since she was a child she was passed a secret recipe for making them. On the forum she becomes friends with Lilian, a batty old lady who loves nothing more than to wind people up on the forum and gain the upper ground. They agree to meet up and get on really well with Lillian telling Marnie that she is lady of the manner in the North Yorkshire village of Wychwell which has an interesting history.
Marnie later finds out that Justin is actually still living at home with his wife and family and has doubts about his honesty. With this information she proceeds warily until one day a woman comes storming into the office looking very pregnant, claiming to be Justin’s wife and she is looking for that bitch who is having an affair with her husband. When she finally finds Marnie she attacks her with venom, hitting her and pulling her hair. Embarrassed and ashamed, Marnie runs off out of work and hides back at home only for Justin’s wife to turn up outside of her house and she starts to smash up Marnie’s neighbours car thinking that it is Marnie’s.
Marnie decides to run away from her troubles when Lillian offers Marnie a place to stay in Wychwell. This leads to Marnie meeting some interesting and challenging people (as well as a potential proper lover interest) as she looks to establish a new life in a village that doesn’t like outsiders. Marnie also gets the opportunity to find out about and resolve some of the mysteries of the village that have remained unanswered for centuries.
The Perfectly Imperfect Woman is a great holiday read (I saved it especially to read on my holiday), and with Milly’s link to cruise ships, it’s perfect to read on a cruise holiday. Being very biased I rate the book a perfect 10, and I will go as far as to say that I think that this is Milly’s best book yet.
Milly has an excellent website where you can find out more about her as a person, details of her back catalogue of books and the chance from time to time to win prizes. Milly’s website is : http://millyjohnson.co.uk/
I hope many of you get to enjoy reading Milly like I have and I’ll give you an another book review soon.
