So I completed Come A Little Closer by Rachel Abbott last night. The book is the 7th instalment of the DCI Tom Douglas novels, the Manchester based DCI who attempts to be a clean by the book officer in all that he does but has the shadow of his family past around him. I purchased this book on my Amazon Kindle for £3.48.
This latest instalment finds Tom and his team investigating the suspicious death of a unknown woman found in a twitchers hut which has been cut off by snow for a couple of weeks (I’ve never known snow last that long in England !!) Whilst the death looks like suicide Tom isn’t convinced and following tests on the body he is convinced foul play is involved.
At the same time Callie, is having a relationship problem with her nasty and abusive boyfriend Ian. Following the death of her grandad she asks Ian to leave before going on a River cruise in Myanmar where she meets Thea and Dr Garrick who are both retired.
The story follows Tom and Callie and there world’s collide when Callie is told that she has murdered Ian although she has no recollection of doing it.
Rachel sets the various channels of the story out well and although I worked out for myself the likely outcome must over a third of the way through, it did not stop me from wanting to read and turn pages at a pace to find out how the story develops. An early character disappears from the storyline about a quarter of the way in and I kept expecting her return but it never came and I guess this maybe my only real criticism of the book.
To me, if you are going to read this book on a cruise, do so when the weather is dull and you are maybe in a quiet corner on board ship. This will usually be over the first few days of an ex UK cruise or cruising out of season.
Out of 10 I would rate the book a 7/10 and to add to that I can highly recommend maybe spending a bit of time reading Rachel’s earlier books if you haven’t done so already. More information on Rachel and her books can be found at http://www.rachel-abbott.com/
Anyway any questions on my review then please feel free to ask.
